Georgetown University Qatar Launches Volunteer Qatar Campaign, Inspiring a Culture of Volunteerism

Posted: Sunday 5 September

Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar recently launched the Volunteer Qatar campaign by distributing 400 Iftar meals to those in need.  The campaign mobilized Georgetown alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends from around the country to deliver these meals to those in need throughout Doha.

Georgetown graduate Haya Al Noaimi, a leading member of the Volunteer Qatar campaign, said, “This initiative is significant because, in addition to running various programs to benefit those in need, we hope it will also inspire a culture of volunteerism in the country. The Qatar community is well known for its generosity and extensive involvement in charity work, but volunteering is not yet a common practice. We hope our events will help to change this by providing opportunities for volunteers and instilling a national sense of pride in volunteering.”

“Georgetown’s tradition of service—a commitment it passes on to its students—is what made it possible for my fellow graduates and I to launch this important campaign. With the university’s continued support, we’re expecting great things from Volunteer Qatar,” concluded Al Noaimi.

In the campaign’s first event, volunteers met at a central Doha location early yesterday evening to pick up the 400 Iftar meals provided by one of Doha’s reputable restaurant chains and sponsored by Georgetown in Qatar. These volunteers, led by Georgetown graduates, were then dispatched to neighborhoods across the city to deliver the meals to those in need.

Lubna Kayyali , a participant in Volunteer Qatar’s event yesterday evening and also a graduate from Georgetown in Qatar, said, “It's a great opportunity to participate in Volunteer Qatar. Volunteer Qatar provides a rewarding outlet for the youth's energy in the way it encourages charity and social service. With teamwork and volunteering efforts, Qatari society will grow and become more adhesive. The day the youth in Qatar are fully mobilized to be part of Volunteer Qatar is a day of national celebration.”

Volunteer Qatar is an initiative designed by Georgetown to serve the nation and its community. Membership and participation in Volunteer Qatar events are open to the public. Volunteers for the campaign’s first event came from diverse backgrounds and represented a mix of ages, gender, and nationalities.

Carnegie Mellon Qatar Lauded by University President

Dr. Cohon during the 2010 Seniors' Celebration

Posted Sunday 5 September

Carnegie Mellon University’s Board of Trustees, with support from the Executive Committee of the Faculty Senate, has extended Jared L. Cohon’s term as president by one year. His current and third five-year term ends in June 2012. With the extension he will have three remaining years as president through June 2013, allowing him the time necessary to complete and make significant progress on key initiatives. Mark Kamlet, executive vice president and provost of the university, agreed to extend his term as well for another year through June 2013.

“Jared Cohon has been an exceptional leader for Carnegie Mellon University. His vision and passion have defined the university’s place in history as we have grown our global presence. This extension is important for us to enable strategic initiatives, such as achieving the goals of our capital campaign, completing our expanded campus master plan, and accelerating our global education programs and various groundbreaking research endeavors,” said Carnegie Mellon Chairman of the Board Raymond J. Lane, a managing partner of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. “Jared Cohon has fostered the growth of Carnegie Mellon’s uniquely collaborative style in education, research and development. The board thanks him for agreeing to stay on an additional year.”

Following the announcement of his extension, Cohon sent a university-wide email lauding faculty, staff and student accomplishments as well as outlining his priorities for the next three years of his tenure. Among his priorities are international programs, including CMU’s campus in Qatar.

The international reach of Carnegie Mellon, which includes programs in Asia, Australia and Europe, enhances the academic experience for its students. The university graduated its third class from Carnegie Mellon Qatar this year. Forty men and 45 women chosen from an applicant pool of 1,334 comprise the Class of 2010.

“Carnegie Mellon University is extremely proud of our Qatar campus,” Cohon said. “Our exemplary students have excelled within CMU Qatar’s three rigorous and demanding majors in business administration, computer science and information systems. I look forward to seeing the positive impact these men and women will have on the world.”

In his email to the university community, Cohon said the university will continue to pursue new international opportunities if they extend Carnegie Mellon's global reach and impact, while adhering to the core principles that assure that Carnegie Mellon controls all important aspects of the programs in a manner consistent with university policy.

Cohon said the university’s history of innovation and accomplishment is a source of pride for everyone at CMU.

“Last year, we saw more major awards for our faculty (election to the national academies and key national awards for junior and senior faculty), students (Churchill, Truman and Goldwater scholarships and a U.S. Supreme Court internship) and alumni (two more Nobel Prizes and several Oscar, Emmy and Tony nominations),” Cohon wrote. “These awards are wonderful examples of our faculty and student excellence and powerful reminders of the knowledge and skills our alumni transfer from Carnegie Mellon to their careers and communities.”

He said faculty, staff and students in every college and school produced results that had an impact in a wide range of areas, from economics, health care, energy and environmental policy, to computer security, new materials, the search for cures for human diseases like cancer and autism, and developments in energy-saving technologies and automated language translation.

High on the list of research and educational initiatives is energy and the environment. President Cohon said there has been much progress on this front, including substantially increased funding from the U.S. Government.

“Currently, we are part of an exciting new consortium with regional university partners and the U.S. Department of Energy. The consortium will be launched this fall, and there is a plan to establish a new institute within Carnegie Mellon. The university’s interests are wide-ranging, we are focused on transitioning from fossil fuels to their alternatives, a very complicated, decades-long process replete with science, technology and policy challenges,” Cohon wrote.

You can read the full text of President Cohon’s university-wide email on his website at http://www.cmu.edu/about/leadership/president/index.shtml

Georgetown Hosts Imam Behind Community Centre Near Ground Zero

              Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf

Posted: Monday 30 August

Georgetown University in Qatar recently hosted Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam behind the initiative for Park51, an Islamic centre near ground zero, in an exclusive discussion session attended by students, staff and faculty, on August 24th.

Arguably one of the most prominent Muslim leaders in the United States, Abdul Rauf is the founder of the Cordoba Initiative, a project aimed at improving relations between Muslims and the West.

Recently, Abdul Rauf’s proposal for a community center about two blocks from the World Trade Centre site has sparked a much heated debate on American values and religious freedom throughout the United States.

“I am convinced that this so called tension or polarization between the West at large and the Muslim world can be fixed in a 10 year time span, if there is the will to do it and the resources put behind it,” he stated.

Abdul Rauf called for a paradigm shift that more aptly expresses American values in dealing with religious and cultural tensions. Abdul Rauf said, “We need to pull back from Huntington’s paradigm of a clash of civilizations, and return to that core American paradigm that best reflects the universal human hunger for freedom and justice for all.”

Dean of Georgetown University in Qatar, Mehran Kamrava thanked Abdul Rauf by stating, “It is in the spirit of dialogue and discourse that we have hosted a conversation with peace builder and bridge builder, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf. I cannot think of a better way to start our academic year than by discussing such a timely and relevant issue as Muslim relations with the West”, he said.

Honoring Organ Donors in Qatar

 Posted: Sunday 5 September

HH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, who is also Vice-Chair of the Supreme Council for Health recently attended the council’s special event honoring organ donors in Qatar.

Twenty five donors, fourteen of which are Qataris were honored at a ceremony held at the SCH premises in the presence of HH Sheikha Mozah and other top dignitaries. The Minister of Public Health, HE Abdullah bin Khalid Al Qahtani, the managing director of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Dr Hanan Al Kuwari, and the renowned Qatar-based Islamic scholar, Dr Yousuf Al Qaradawi, were among the dignitaries present.

“As far as organ transplant is concerned, Qatar is a front runner, legislatively and practically, as such operations started as early as 1986 at Hamad Medical Corporation, which has been conducting these operations with a high degree of success that matches the best medical centres in the world. However, we face the problem of low number of donors. This forces some people to look elsewhere for compensation, which may expose them to immoral trade in organs,” said Al Qahtani.

This initiative, a first-of-its-kind in Qatar, is part of the national organ donation campaign, dubbed “Together We Plant Hope”, and launched jointly by the SCH and HMC.  “This is a unique endeavor that will play a major role in raising public awareness about organ donation in Qatar” said Dr. Riadh Fadhil, senior consultant and transplant surgeon at Hamad Medical Corporation.

“I take this opportunity to announce to you that HH Sheikha Mozah has approved the Doha organ donation accord. This has put us all face to face with a national, moral and professional responsibility to make this project a success. This requires the joint efforts of all government and non-government parties to honor donors for their humane and courageous actions,” said the minister.

The celebration comes as a gesture of support and appreciation for those kind individuals who donated their organs and their families as well.

The SCH and the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have been working together in a national campaign to encourage organ donation. The campaign aims at eliminating the long list of those waiting for organ transplant at HMC and to protect patients from falling victims to immoral practices related to organ transplant outside Qatar.
